| Many people are practicing techniques to improve their health
such as meditation, exercise and improved diet. As this is done,
a deeper awareness often develops concerning the flow of subtle
energies in and around the body and the connection between these
subtle energies and one's health. This developing awareness
validates the ancient idea that strong life force energy contributes
to good health. The existence of life force energy, and the
necessity for it to flow freely in and around one's body to
maintain health, has been studied and acknowledged by health
care practitioners and scientists.
Mikao Usui in the late 1800s discovered a healing art in
Japan, called Reiki (ray-key).
is a system of subtle,
vibrational (energy) healing that has no medical contraindications.
It is holistic in that it does not attack disease in any form,
but rather, it encourages the individual towards balance (homeostasis).
Reiki operates on the supposition that the subtle vibrational
structure is the foundation for everything that happens on
the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual levels. Even
the subtlest shift on the vibrational level carries the potential
to affect every level of our experience. The term Reiki refers
both to subtle vibrational enegry and to this particular way
of accessing it. Reiki restores energy balance and vitality
by relieving the physical and emotional effects of unreleased
stress. Reiki treats the person’s body, emotions, mind
and spirit as a whole. Reiki is powerful, yet wonderfully
gentle and nurturing.
The system of Reiki is comprised of techniques for transmitting
this subtle energy to yourself and others through the hands,
or eyes into the human subtle energy system. (A treatment
feels like warm, gentle sunshine, which flows through you,
surrounds you and brings comfort.) During a treatment, the
recipient remains fully clothed. People experience Reiki as
supportive regardless the availability of cure. Reiki is not
directed by the practitioner, and, in this way, it is very
different from other vibrational or bioenergetic modalities
such as Therapeutic Touch and qigong. Reiki needs no diagnosis
because the flow of subtle healing vibration is spontaneous
and drawn by the recipient. Reiki provides symptomatic relief
without suppressing critical symptoms. Reiki moves with nature,
not counter to it. Reiki supports any medical, or supplemental
healing methods a client may be using and is of growing interest
to chiropractors, medical doctors, physiotherapists, psychotherapists,
psychologists and hypnotherapists. Adapted from Laurelle Gia
